Root Canal Treatment in Brunswick
If that sounds familiar, you’re certainly not alone. Brunswick Road Dental has been part of the local community since 1996, and we’ve seen how much unnecessary anxiety people can carry into this appointment. Modern root canal treatment is very different from what many people expect. Our goal is to help you feel comfortable, informed, and supported from your first visit through to your final appointment.
Why a Root Canal?
Root canal treatment aims to preserve a tooth that has become infected or badly damaged. This can happen when decay, cracks, trauma, or large fillings allow bacteria to reach the inner part of the tooth.
The procedure involves removing the affected tissue inside the tooth, cleaning the root canals, and sealing the space to help protect the remaining tooth structure. Wherever possible, our dentists work to save natural teeth and help preserve your smile, comfort, and bite function.
Our Approach to Comfortable Treatment
At our Brunswick practice, we take a gentle, unhurried approach to root canal treatment. We understand that many patients feel anxious, so we explain what is happening, answer your questions, and make sure you feel informed before care begins.
Our dentists use modern rotary instrumentation to clean the root canals efficiently and carefully. Intraoral cameras may also be used to help show you what we can see, so you can better understand your diagnosis and options.
As a QIP-accredited practice, our systems and standards are independently assessed, giving patients added confidence in the care they receive.

What to Expect: Your Appointments
Your first visit is about understanding what is happening and whether root canal treatment is the right path. We may take X-rays or scans, assess the tooth, explain our findings, and discuss your options, including the pros and cons of each.
If antibiotics are needed before treatment, your dentist may prescribe them where clinically appropriate.
At your treatment visit, local anaesthetic is used to numb the area. Your dentist then removes the infected tissue from inside the tooth, cleans the root canals, and places a temporary seal.
The aim of this appointment is to address the source of infection and help settle the discomfort associated with the tooth. Every patient responds differently, and we’ll explain what to expect afterwards.
Once the tooth has settled, usually after several weeks or a few months, a custom dental crown may be recommended to help protect and restore the tooth.
This final stage helps support the remaining tooth structure and restore everyday function, such as chewing and biting.
Health Fund Cover and Costs
Our practice is a preferred provider with Medibank, Bupa, HCF, nib, and Defence Health.
The cost of root canal treatment varies depending on the tooth and complexity involved. Before you commit to treatment, our team can help you understand your health fund cover, discuss expected out-of-pocket costs, and answer any questions about payment options.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is root canal treatment painful?
Root canal treatment is performed under local anaesthetic, so the area is numb during the procedure. Many patients compare it to having a filling. Some tenderness afterwards is normal and usually settles within a few days.
How many appointments will I need?
Root canal treatment is usually completed in three stages: consultation and assessment, treatment, and crown placement. Timing can vary depending on the tooth, infection, and your individual circumstances.
How do I know if I need a root canal?
Signs may include ongoing toothache, lingering sensitivity to hot or cold, swelling, tenderness when chewing, or a tooth that has darkened. A dental examination and X-rays are needed to confirm what is causing the problem.
Can I use my health fund for root canal treatment?
Many extras policies include benefits for root canal treatment. As a preferred provider with several major health funds, our practice can help you check your cover before treatment begins.
What happens if I don’t get treatment?
